Vishal P Varun Chakravarthy is an Indian international cricket player who plays domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. He is a skillful right-arm leg-break bowler who showcased his skill in national-level games.
He made his T20 debut in July 2021 and became the second-oldest player to make his ODI Debut after Farookh Engineer in the ODI Cricket for India on 9 February against England.
Recently, he clinched a 5-wicket haul against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 and led India to victory.

Early Life of Varun Chakravarthy
Varun Chakravarthy is a right-arm leg spinner who plays for the Indian team at the national level and domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu and also plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. Chakravarthy was born on 29 August 1991 in Bidar, Karnataka.
He is a very talented leg-spinner who performed well in most games for his teams. He started playing cricket at he age of 13 as a wicket-keeper batsman. But after 4 years he quit playing cricket as it seemed there was no future for him.
After that, he decided to become an architect, but after two years of employment as an architect, he left his job and started playing cricket.
In 2015, he started playing cricket as a medium-pace bowler for ChromBest Cricket Club. In 2017, he had a knee injury while playing in a match for ChromBest and therefore he rested for six months.
He then made his comeback as a spinner and started playing for Jubilee Cricket Club in the fourth division.
Once he was also included in Tamil Nadu’s Karaikudi Kaalai Team, however, he did not get any chance to play.

Varun Chakravarthy’s father’s name is Vinod Chakravarthy who is an ITS Officer for BSNL, is half-Tamil and half-Malyali. His mother’s name is Malini is a housemaker. He is only sister whose name is Vanditha Chakravarthy.
Chakravarthy moved to Adyar, Chennai in his childhood, where he completed his primary education at Kendriya Vidyalaya CLRI and then completed his high schooling at St. Patrcik’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School where he played cricket as a wicket-keeper.
Then, he left cricket to focus on his academic career and obtain a Bachelor’s degree in architecture from SRM University.
On 11 December 2020, he married his longtime girlfriend Neha Khedekar in a closed ceremony in Chennai.
The couple is blessed with a son named Aathman. He also has a sister named Vanditha Chakravarthy.

Varun Chakrvarthy Cricket Career
He started playing cricket for the Siechem Madurai Panthers in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
He came to the limelight in 2018 when in played for Siechem Madurai Panthers in TNPL, where he clinched 9 wickets in 10 matches and bowled 125 dot balls out of 240 deliveries.
Domestic Career
He made his List A debut for Tamil Nadu against Gujarat in Chennai in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 20 September 2018.
He was the leading wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy with 29 wickets in 9 matches at an economy rate of 4.23.
He also made his first-class debut for the same team on 12 November 2018 in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy.
IPL Career
In December 2018, he was signed by the Kings XI Punjab in the player auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League at the price of Rs.8.4 crore.
He made his IPL debut on 27 March 2019 for Kings XI Punjab where he conceded 25 runs in his debut spell. And also became a bowler with the highest runs conceded by a bowler on debut in IPL.
But in the next season, he was released by Kings XI Punjab ahead of IPL 2020 Auction, and bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the auction for the IPL 2020 season.
he came to highlight when he took his first 5-wicket haul in the Indian Premier League against Delhi Capitals in Abu Dhabi.
He also became the highest wicket-taker for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2021 Indian Premier League season.
In the IPL 2023 auction, he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whooping amount of Rs.12 crore. Currently, he also plays for Kolkata Knight Riders.

International Cricket Career
In October 2020, he was added to India’s T20 squad for the T20 Series against Australia. Unfortunately, he was ruled from the squad after an injury on 9 November 2020.
In the next year in February 2021, he was named in India’s T20 squad for T20 Series against England.
In June 2021, he was added to the India squad for the ODI and T20 series against Sri Lanka.
He made his T20 debut for India on 25 July 2021 against Sri Lanka, where he took the wicket of Dasun Shanaka.
In September 2021, he was named in India’s T20 squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
On January 2025, he was added to the India squad for the T20 and ODI series against England.
On 22 January 2025, in the series opener match of the 5 Match T20 series, he took 3 wickets. In the T20 series, he clinched 14 wickets in 5 games at an average of 9.86 with an economy of 7.66. and became the third-highest wicket-taker in the bilateral series.
After the end of the series, he was added to India’s Champions Trophy 2025 as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement.
He played his first game against New Zealand on 2nd March 2025 and clinched the first 5-wicket haul in the Champions Trophy.
